Motta Defends Mesa Move to Oust Ramagem Without Plenary Vote as Ex‑Deputy Blasts Decision

The House chief says the shortcut aimed to avoid renewed institutional conflict with the Supreme Court.

Overview

  • Orders removing Alexandre Ramagem from office were published on Dec. 18 in the Chamber’s official journal and signed by Hugo Motta and four other members of the board.
  • Hugo Motta said party leaders agreed to execute the Supreme Court order via the Mesa instead of taking it to the floor to prevent a fresh clash after the Carla Zambelli episode.
  • In a video on X, Ramagem called the act a “canetada,” labeled Motta a “marionette” of a Supreme Court justice, and argued the move defied the Constitution and House rules.
  • Ramagem is in the United States with a preventive arrest order issued in November and is considered a fugitive; the Federal Police say they are investigating who helped him leave Brazil.
  • The Supreme Court in September had ordered his mandate revoked after convicting him of involvement in an attempted coup and sentencing him to 16 years, 1 month and 15 days, rendering him ineligible.
