Overview
- Champion Foods LLC issued a voluntary recall of specific lots of Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread on May 29 after tracing the product to an implicated ingredient.
- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says the dose of dry milk powder came from California Dairies and was used by a third-party seasoning maker in the pizza's five-cheese sauce.
- Affected packages were sold at major retailers nationwide including Costco, Walmart, Kroger, Target and others and lists of UPCs and sell-by dates have been published so consumers can identify impacted boxes.
- No illnesses have been reported so far and routine testing of seasoning batches was negative, but companies say they are recalling the product out of an abundance of caution and health officials warn Salmonella can cause serious illness in vulnerable people.
- Tracebacks and supplier investigations are ongoing and regulators warn additional products that used the same milk powder may still be identified and recalled.
