Mother Who Facilitated Child’s Rape and Her Brother Both Jailed for 15 Years

A judge condemned the intrafamilial abuse as an extreme betrayal of trust and set 16-year headline terms before reducing them to 15 years.

Overview

  • The Central Criminal Court in Dublin sentenced the mother and her brother to 15 years’ imprisonment, backdated to July 2025 for her and November 2024 for him.
  • Jurors convicted the mother of two sexual assaults in 2001 when the child was about four and of facilitating the rape in March 2003, and convicted the uncle of the 2003 rape.
  • The judge said the offending was of a particularly cruel and depraved nature and noted neither defendant accepted the verdicts or expressed remorse.
  • The victim, now in her 20s, described lasting trauma including PTSD, anxiety and depression, and said she now sees herself as a survivor.
  • A third accused faced a hung jury and the DPP later declined a retrial, discontinuing those charges.
