Mother Testifies in Trial of Husband Accused of Driving Wife to Suicide

Prosecutors argue his coercive control renders him liable for her 2017 suicide despite being overseas at the time.

Overview

  • Michelle Baird told jurors her daughter Tarryn became withdrawn after marriage, described being tightly scheduled at home, and that the defendant removed his wedding ring two weeks after her death.
  • The court heard claims that Christopher Trybus threatened to snap his wife's neck and dissolve her body in acid, and that handcuffs and a debugging device were later found in a bedside table.
  • Trybus, 43, is charged with manslaughter, controlling and coercive behaviour, and two rapes allegedly committed in October and November 2016, and he denies all charges.
  • Jurors previously heard from friend Elizabeth Clarke, with texts in which Tarryn reported bruises, a concussion, increased monitoring of her movements, and a request to check Women’s Aid for a place.
  • Prosecutors say sustained abuse left Tarryn feeling unable to leave, and they are advancing the case that Trybus can be held legally responsible even though he was abroad when she died.
