Most Germans Reject Card-Reader Tip Prompts, New Survey Finds

The dispute now centers on transparency of tip distribution.

Overview

  • A YouGov survey for dpa conducted Dec. 15–17 of 2,060 adults found a majority views preset tip options negatively, with more than one in five now tipping less and only 6% tipping more.
  • Nearly 30% of respondents said they have not encountered the on-screen prompts, indicating uneven rollout across venues.
  • Industry group Dehoga says the presets help guests tip without cash in a card-first era and stresses that declining to add a tip remains a voluntary choice on the terminal.
  • The NGG union warns guests may be unsure whether digital tips reach staff and reports workers saying employers cite tips to hold back higher collectively bargained wages.
  • Touchscreen tipping grew in Germany with the shift to cashless payments during the pandemic and borrows from U.S. systems where prominent high-percentage buttons can nudge behavior, as a viral no-tip Facebook post has now intensified the public debate.
