Most Brazilians Cannot Name Their Members of Congress, Datafolha Poll Shows

Low recall signals weak public accountability for legislators, potentially prompting changes in how campaigns seek voter attention.

Overview

  • A Datafolha survey released June 28–29 found that 68% of respondents could not name a sitting federal deputy and 75% could not name a senator when asked without a list.
  • The same poll found wide forgetting of legislative votes from 2022, with about two-thirds saying they do not remember who they voted for in contests for deputy or senator while 85% recall their presidential vote.
  • Datafolha interviewed 2,004 people in 139 municipalities with questions about 2022 votes asked of 1,898 respondents aged 20 or older, and the study is registered at the TSE under BR-09956/2026.
  • Interviewees sometimes misidentified officeholders, citing figures no longer in the seat or attributing the wrong chamber to a name, which highlights public confusion about who represents them.
  • The results raise practical consequences for accountability and campaign strategy by reducing voter ability to monitor legislators, and they may feed calls for clearer candidate visibility and electoral reform ahead of 2026.
