MoSPI Confirms 2026 Rollout of New CPI, GDP and IIP Series After Methods Overhaul

Officials describe an overhaul using digital prices, tax filings, double deflation to address IMF‑flagged gaps.

Overview

  • At a Dec. 23 consultative workshop in New Delhi, MoSPI set release dates: CPI (2024=100) on Feb. 12, 2026; national accounts with 2022–23 base on Feb. 27, 2026; and IIP with 2022–23 base on May 28, 2026.
  • The revised GDP series will include back‑series for 2022–23 through 2024–25, with officials saying they do not expect material changes to broad growth estimates.
  • CPI compilation will add e‑commerce prices from 12 large cities, web‑scraped prices for services such as airfares, telecom and OTT, plus administrative tariffs for rail, fuel and post.
  • National accounts will adopt double deflation, integrate supply‑use tables, and expand use of real‑time GSTN data to strengthen estimates, including support for better state GSDP measurement.
  • MoSPI outlined new statistical tools, including an Annual Survey of Service Sector Enterprises, an Index of Service Production planned for 2026, satellite accounts, and a comprehensive National Product Classification.
