Overview
- Merseyside Police said a mortar was discovered in recycling waste at Bidston Household Waste Recycling Centre at around 9am on Monday.
- Staff evacuated the site, a police cordon was set up, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal officers were called to confirm the item’s nature.
- EOD removed the device to Hoylake beach, where a controlled explosion was carried out and cordons were later lifted.
- Veolia reported the suspicious item was spotted on the sorting line and said the centre closed temporarily as a safety measure.
- The tip reopened at about 2pm, and Wallasey Bridge Road was reported to remain open during the response.
