Morelia’s Torito de Petate Carnival Draws Crowds as Police Manage Street Closures

Police enforced timed closures with strict item bans to keep the family parade orderly.

Overview

  • The parade took place on February 14 along Avenida Madero in Morelia’s historic center after a scheduled 11:00 a.m. start from the Fuente de las Tarascas.
  • Policía Morelia ran a special traffic operation with an initial 07:00 closure on Avenida Madero and further closures from the Fuente de las Tarascas to Calle Abasolo between 10:00 and 14:00, reopening progressively as crowds thinned.
  • Authorities barred firearms, glass containers, alcohol, pyrotechnics, knives and machetes to reduce risks for participants and spectators.
  • Officials later reported 100 toritos de petate and 35,000 attendees with a safe outcome, while earlier route coverage counted roughly 85 entries, including 15 involving children.
  • The department issued a #AlertaVial advisory urging alternate routes and provided the citizen contact line 443 113 5000 for assistance.
