More Than a Dozen Cats Found Dead in Coventry Pond

Official probes have begun while owners seek microchip scans to identify animals

Overview

  • The pond in a vacant Canley house contained over a dozen cat carcasses that a local resident discovered on Sunday when she went to check on reports of a dead cat.
  • The finder, Paula Singleton, recovered multiple heads, whole bodies and body parts and identified two of her missing pets among the remains.
  • The RSPCA said it is "very concerned" and has opened an investigation (incident number 01804675) and Coventry City Council has opened a case involving police and the homeowner.
  • Singleton reports an RSPCA inspector recommended post-mortems but she was later told formal post-mortems would not proceed unless paid for privately at about £300 per cat.
  • Residents want the pond drained and recovered animals scanned for microchips so owners can be identified and cause of death can be established, with possible welfare and criminal implications if deliberate harm is found.
