MoonPay Open-Sources Wallet Standard for AI Agents Backed by PayPal and Major Foundations

The framework gives agents a shared wallet method that keeps private keys out of their runtime.

Overview

  • MoonPay launched the Open Wallet Standard on Monday, releasing MIT-licensed code on GitHub, npm and PyPI.
  • The standard lets AI agents create wallets and sign transactions through one interface across Ethereum, Solana, Bitcoin and other major chains without direct key access.
  • More than 15 organizations support the release, including PayPal, OKX, Ripple, Circle, the Ethereum Foundation and the Solana Foundation.
  • The move follows MoonPay’s February rollout of its non-custodial MoonPay Agents stack and an early-March integration of Ledger hardware signing.
  • Industry coverage warns the standard’s safety depends on how it is implemented and says regulation and liability for autonomous payments remain unclear after recent AI-related exploits caused losses topping $4.6 million.
