Monta Ellis Named General Manager of Alcorn State Men’s Basketball

The hire is intended to lift the program’s recruiting profile, deepen donor and brand ties, and create Division I chances for underserved Mississippi players.

Overview

  • Alcorn State confirmed that Monta Ellis will join the Braves as general manager of the men’s basketball program, a move announced on Friday, August 7, 2026.
  • Athletic director E. D’Wayne Robinson said Ellis’s role is meant to act as an endorsement for the program that can raise respect with recruits, sponsors and alumni.
  • Ellis is a 12-year NBA veteran who was the No. 40 pick in the 2005 draft and this will be his first prominent front-office position after a decade spent coaching and training players.
  • The Braves come into the appointment after a 9-23 season in 2025-26 and three straight losing campaigns, and the GM role is expected to help with roster building, transfer-portal decisions, NIL planning and player mentoring.
  • Ellis’s hiring follows a recent pattern of former NBA players taking administration roles at HBCUs and could lead to greater visibility, stronger in-state recruiting and increased donor interest for Alcorn State.
