Monsoon Returns to Phoenix Valley, Dust Wall Triggers Sky Harbor Ground Stop

Reduced visibility from the dust forced flight halts at Sky Harbor and raises the risk of more travel and storm impacts during a week of daily monsoon chances.

Overview

  • A large wall of dust moved from Chandler through downtown Phoenix into the West Valley between about 7 and 9 p.m. Sunday, sharply cutting visibility for drivers and residents.
  • The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop at Phoenix Sky Harbor during the evening dust event, producing reported delays of at least 45 minutes for some flights.
  • Local officials reported storm impacts beyond dust with the Flood Control District of Maricopa County confirming more than three-quarters of an inch of rain in spots near the Superstition Mountains.
  • The dust event also caused travel and utility problems across the metro, with National Weather Service warnings for parts of the Valley and reports of dozens of flights delayed, canceled, or diverted and localized power outages.
  • Forecasts show daily chances for monsoon storms over the next seven days, keeping the Valley at elevated risk for more dust storms, sudden heavy downpours, flash flooding, and additional travel disruption.
