Overview
- Torrential monsoon rains triggered multiple landslides that blocked the Geyzing/Gyalshing–Legship road and temporarily cut off West Sikkim’s district headquarters, according to district officials and multiple reports on Wednesday.
- The India Meteorological Department recorded 95.2 mm of rainfall at Geyzing in 24 hours, and officials said the worst collapse occurred near Omchung about two kilometres from Geyzing with at least three separate slide sites along the corridor.
- Excavators and clearance crews worked through the night to clear mud, sludge and large boulders from the roadway, and local authorities estimated several more hours of work before traffic could be restored while operations remain ongoing.
- Local representatives and officials said the route has long suffered seasonal slope failures and that permanent restoration and mitigation measures raised in DISHA committee meetings have not been implemented by agencies such as PWD and NHIDCL.
