Overview
- Exceptionally heavy monsoon rain since June 24 has caused flash floods and landslides that left four dead, 21 injured, two missing and roughly 90,499 people affected in Arunachal Pradesh and about 46,900–48,500 people affected in Assam.
- State reports list widespread damage to homes and infrastructure, including hundreds of kutcha and pucca houses damaged, about 80 roads and 12 bridges in Arunachal, hundreds of water schemes and power lines disrupted, and more than 300 hectares of agricultural and horticultural land affected.
- Rescue and relief work is ongoing with NDRF, SDRF, state police, the Indian Air Force, civil aviation helicopters, the BRO and local volunteers conducting evacuations and setting up relief camps; an IAF helicopter rescued four people from an island in the Sisiri River.
- Union ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Kiren Rijiju inspected worst-hit areas, promised full central assistance, said an interim report will be submitted to the prime minister and called for permanent engineering solutions for recurring floods.
- The India Meteorological Department has warned the next five days are crucial, key gauges on the Brahmaputra and Disang are above danger levels, and damaged road links and submerged farmland raise urgent concerns for continued evacuations and farmers’ livelihoods.
