Monrovia Bear Euthanized After DNA Links to Two Human Injuries

State wildlife managers said DNA tied the bear to two human injuries, triggering a public-safety decision under department policy.

Overview

  • CDFW captured the mother bear and two cubs on Sunday and euthanized the adult on Tuesday, according to Monrovia’s city manager.
  • The cubs were placed in a permitted rehabilitation facility with plans for release into suitable habitat once they are old enough.
  • Police said the latest encounter occurred Saturday on Oakglade Drive when the bear swiped a woman walking her dog, causing minor injuries before a neighbor scared the animal off.
  • DNA testing also linked the bear to a June 2025 incident in the same neighborhood in which an elderly man on his porch was scratched and recovered.
  • City leaders sought relocation to the Angeles National Forest, but CDFW cited public safety, concerns about learned behavior in cubs, and poor outcomes from relocation; more than 3,000 residents signed a petition opposing the killing.
