Monongahela Incline Closes After Overnight Rescue Over Control-System Failure

PRT cites a control-system failure, requiring repairs plus a state inspection before service resumes.

Overview

  • Pittsburgh EMS used a high-angle rope system to free two passengers during an overnight stall, completing the rescue in about 90 minutes with no injuries reported.
  • The funicular, which links Mount Washington and downtown Pittsburgh, stopped with one rider in each car, prompting Port Authority Police to call EMS teams to the scene.
  • Pittsburgh Regional Transit now says the incline is closed until further notice because maintenance crews could not restore service after the control system fault.
  • Shuttle buses are running every 10 to 15 minutes in place of the incline, and service will not restart until technicians finish repairs and testing and the state signs off.
  • The closure follows another incident six months ago that stranded nearly 30 riders, raising concerns for commuters and for nearby businesses that rely on incline traffic.
