Overview
- Punjab’s ward delimitation board approved the draft on Saturday, keeping the total at 50 and integrating Aerocity, IT City, Sectors 81 and 82, and several villages for first-time participation.
- The plan outlines five Scheduled Caste wards (three SC-general and two SC-women), two for Backward Classes, and reserves half of all wards for women as required by law.
- Odd-numbered wards will be designated for women, even-numbered wards for general category, and women may still contest general seats.
- The draft will be placed before the civic House on Monday, opening a nine-day period for citizens and parties to file objections before final notification.
- Congress Mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu and two councillors boycotted the meeting alleging inadequate notice and data, while AAP MLA Kulwant Singh said the exercise followed rules and invited written objections; civic polls are expected in February–March 2026.
