Moderate Quakes Strike Piura, Peru and Guerrero, Mexico

National seismic and naval agencies confirmed the tremors and said no tsunami or major damage is expected as authorities continue local inspections and monitoring.

Overview

  • A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck 10 km west of Suyo in Piura at 1:35 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, the Instituto Geofísico del Perú reported, locating the event at about 68 km depth.
  • Mexico’s Servicio Sismológico Nacional recorded a roughly 5.2 quake near San Marcos, Guerrero at 12:20 p.m. on June 13 with a depth near 10 km, a shock felt across parts of the Costa Chica and in Acapulco.
  • Peru’s navy and Mexico’s Centro de Alerta de Tsunamis said neither event is expected to generate sea‑level variations, and local authorities in both countries reported no major damage or casualties so far.
  • Mexico’s SASMEX/CIRES early‑warning system activated alerts in some towns but not others because automatic warnings depend on the quake’s distance and the energy detected in the first seconds of shaking.
  • Officials urged residents to follow official channels, review safety plans and remember that earthquakes cannot be precisely predicted, noting that deeper events like Piura’s tend to be felt more widely but cause less surface damage.
