Moderate Quake Strikes Malatya, Türkiye, Prompting School Closures and Dozens of Minor Injuries

Early surveys found no major damage during a provincewide emergency inspection.

Overview

  • The earthquake, which hit Wednesday at 9 a.m. local time in Battalgazi, was measured at M5.6 by Turkey’s AFAD and M5.4 by USGS and EMSC.
  • Governor Seddar Yavuz said 74 people sought care, including 15 for panic and 15 with light injuries, with 46 discharged and 18 kept for observation.
  • Local authorities evacuated schools and closed them for the day across Malatya as AFAD teams began building checks after shaking was felt in Adiyaman, Elazig, Tunceli and Sanliurfa.
  • USGS located the epicenter north of Sincik and west-southwest of Malatya and estimated about 2,000 people felt strong shaking, 66,000 moderate and roughly 1.6 million light.
  • EMSC logged at least 22 aftershocks within the first two hours, and USGS flagged low odds of widespread landslides or liquefaction but warned of localized risks in a province still recovering from the 2023 Kahramanmaras quakes.
