Overview
- The earthquake, which hit Wednesday at 9 a.m. local time in Battalgazi, was measured at M5.6 by Turkey’s AFAD and M5.4 by USGS and EMSC.
- Governor Seddar Yavuz said 74 people sought care, including 15 for panic and 15 with light injuries, with 46 discharged and 18 kept for observation.
- Local authorities evacuated schools and closed them for the day across Malatya as AFAD teams began building checks after shaking was felt in Adiyaman, Elazig, Tunceli and Sanliurfa.
- USGS located the epicenter north of Sincik and west-southwest of Malatya and estimated about 2,000 people felt strong shaking, 66,000 moderate and roughly 1.6 million light.
- EMSC logged at least 22 aftershocks within the first two hours, and USGS flagged low odds of widespread landslides or liquefaction but warned of localized risks in a province still recovering from the 2023 Kahramanmaras quakes.
