Overview
- Harsha Sunny was stopped by Mumbai Customs after arriving from Bangkok on the night of June 10–11 and officers found 12 vacuum-sealed packets that preliminarily tested as 11.824 kg of hydroponic cannabis in her checked trolley bag.
- She was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, produced before court and remanded to judicial custody while her defence says she was befriended abroad and asked to carry the bag; she has since sought bail.
- Separately, Mumbai Customs arrested Aziz Hussain after recovering about 2.96 kg of marijuana concealed inside dietary supplement packets that arrived from Bangkok.
- Investigators say the probes are at an early stage and they are examining travel records, phone and communication data and financial links to determine whether the suspects were unwitting couriers or part of organised smuggling chains.
- The seizures form part of a wider pattern of recent airport interdictions that use APIS profiling and targeted surveillance to intercept high-value hydroponic cannabis trafficked from Southeast Asia, raising the prospect of tighter checks on passengers on those routes.
