Modders Run NVIDIA DLSS 5 Neural Renderer After DLL Was Found in NBA 2K27

The leak offers a first public look at DLSS 5's frame-based neural rendering, showing technical limits that may affect its planned fall rollout.

Overview

  • Researchers discovered a 158 MB nvngx_dlssnr.dll identified as NVIDIA DLSSNR 310.8.0.0 inside an early-access build of NBA 2K27 and made the file public.
  • Hours after the discovery, RenoDX modders extracted that DLL and loaded it into Remedy’s Control to produce the first working demonstration of DLSS 5 outside an official integration.
  • The unofficial implementation so far only affects character models and exposes developer-style sliders for tone, local structure, skin structure, and neural renderer intensity.
  • Early tests reported major technical problems: HDR did not work correctly, the neural renderer runs late in the graphics pipeline after upscaling or tone mapping, and a measured frame-rate drop at 4K on an RTX 5070 Ti fell from about 71 FPS to 35 FPS.
  • NVIDIA has not listed NBA 2K27 as DLSS 5 compatible and the company plans an official fall rollout for RTX 50-series GPUs; DLSS 5 itself uses per-frame color output and motion vectors to infer material and lighting details rather than relying on 3D engine data.
