Modder Puts Morrowind Inside Fallout 4’s Pip-Boy, Releases Playable PC Mod

The proof-of-concept shows real-time engine streaming that turns Fallout 4’s wrist screen into a window for a second game.

Overview

  • RPGKing117 released a mod that lets players run The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind on Fallout 4’s Pip-Boy and in-game terminals, with a public build hosted on GitHub.
  • The mod streams a custom OpenMW build into Fallout 4 by rendering Morrowind in a hidden window and piping its framebuffer to the Pip-Boy display at an upscaled 1024×1024 resolution.
  • A custom Fallout 4 Script Extender plugin triggers the holotape app and forwards keyboard input to Morrowind through a shared-memory bridge so controls work inside Fallout 4.
  • Setup requires Steam copies of Fallout 4 and Morrowind, F4SE, and 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, and it needs a capable PC because both games run at the same time.
  • The mod is currently distributed via GitHub after a Nexus Mods upload was automatically quarantined over its custom DLL files, and a Fallout 1 version has been shown in video but is not yet released.
