Mob Torches Homes in Chhattisgarh Village as Police Reinforce Area

Police say the clashes followed assaults by three men recently out on bail in a 2024 temple-desecration case.

Overview

  • At least six homes and several vehicles belonging to members of a minority community were set on fire in Dutkaiyya, Gariaband, with some reports putting the number of houses closer to a dozen.
  • The three alleged assailants — Arif Qureshi, Salim Khan and Imran Siddiqui — were rearrested by about 6 pm on Sunday after attacks on locals and a witness earlier in the day.
  • Seven police personnel were injured while shielding residents, and officers rescued roughly 20 people, including a group of children later escorted from a madrasa.
  • FIRs have been registered for attempt to murder, rioting and arson against several people, and police say a woman has been booked for a brick attack that seriously injured an officer.
  • Heavy security remains in place as investigators examine eyewitness accounts, and many minority families have left the village to take shelter elsewhere.
