MMRDA Fines Contractor, Consultant After Teen Worker’s Death on Sewri–Worli Connector

The penalties signal a tougher line on site safety after an overnight crane accident killed a 19-year-old worker.

Overview

  • Ravi Giri, 19, died early Tuesday after a suspended steel frame swung during a crane move near KEM Hospital and struck his chest, with doctors declaring him dead at 3:05 am.
  • Bhoiwada police filed a case under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against crane operator Mohammad Anas Shaikh and site supervisor Anil Giri.
  • MMRDA imposed a Rs 1 crore fine on contractor J. Kumar and Rs 25 lakh on consultant Asystem STUP Wednesday for safety failures and what it called a delayed, off-channel report of the death.
  • Officials said the authority learned of the accident more than 20 hours later through media reports, in breach of rules that require immediate incident escalation from project sites.
  • The 4.5 km Sewri–Worli Connector is a key link between the trans-harbour bridge and Mumbai’s coastal routes, a schedule that has driven night work and heightened scrutiny of on-site safety after a spate of recent fatalities.
