MMA Trainee Hrishikesh Koloth Killed in Rare Saskatchewan Bear Attack

Investigators have sent the euthanized bear for a necropsy to help reconstruct the May 8 encounter at a remote UraniumX exploration site.

Overview

  • On May 8, 2026 a 27-year-old contractor was fatally injured by a black bear while working at the Zoo Bay property near Nordbye Lake in northern Saskatchewan.
  • A civilian at the remote site shot and killed the bear after the attack and the animal is undergoing a necropsy at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon as part of an active investigation.
  • Vancouver-based UraniumX Discovery Corp confirmed the death of one of its contractors and provincial RCMP officers notified the victim’s family.
  • The man has been identified as Hrishikesh Koloth, a Kerala-born MMA trainee who moved to Canada about three years ago, lived in Penticton, and was due to begin coaching in Vancouver in June.
  • Fatal bear attacks are extremely rare in Saskatchewan—this is reported as the province’s fourth recorded fatality—and the timing and remote location have prompted questions about wildlife precautions and emergency response at isolated work camps.
