MLS Unveils 2027 Sprint Season To Launch Switch To Summer-to-Spring Calendar

The league says the reset aligns with international transfer windows.

Overview

  • From February to May 2027, each of the 30 clubs will play a 14-game, conference-only slate with seven home and seven away matches.
  • The top eight teams in each conference will enter single-elimination playoffs, culminating in the MLS Cup in May 2027.
  • Performance in the sprint season will award five 2028 CONCACAF Champions Cup berths and 18 Leagues Cup spots, nine per conference.
  • The full 2027–28 season begins in July 2027 under the new cycle, with playoffs and the MLS Cup scheduled for May 2028.
  • The calendar introduces a mid-December to early February winter break with no January matches and is designed to free players for summer national-team tournaments.
