Mizoram Police Bust Forgery Racket That Freed 17 From Lunglei Jail

The case exposes gaps in jail access control, document checks.

Overview

  • Mizoram Police, which issued a detailed statement Saturday, said 17 inmates were let out using fake court orders that cited the Lunglei court and the Gauhati High Court.
  • The releases took place between January 30 and March 18 after jail staff accepted forged papers as genuine, with documents prepared on a jail office computer and at a Rahsi Veng print shop.
  • The scheme surfaced when two undertrials showed suspect release papers in court on April 24, prompting District and Sessions Judge R. Lalduhawmi to file an FIR on April 27.
  • Police arrested two alleged ringleaders on May 1 and a court remanded them on May 7, naming undertrial Jeremia Lalthangtura and a non-regular ambulance driver, C. Laltlanhlua.
  • Investigators rearrested 12 of those freed, reported one death after release, sent seized computers and printers to the Forensic Science Laboratory, and said inmates were charged Rs 4,000 to Rs 50,000 each.
