Mitre Line Closes Tigre Branch Through Feb. 28 for Emergency Track and Signal Works

Declared under a national rail emergency, the works replace worn infrastructure to restore safe speeds.

Overview

  • Trenes Argentinos has suspended Tigre branch service until February 28 and is limiting the José León Suárez and Bartolomé Mitre branches to Belgrano R, with no trains entering Retiro.
  • The current phase advances along 7.7 km of difficult-access segments on the Tigre branch after works began on January 10 in locations including San Fernando, Virreyes, Vicente López and the Figueroa Alcorta rail bridge.
  • At Retiro, a new automatic signalling system is being commissioned with 28 signals and ATS beacons, 16 switch machines and 70 track‑circuit boxes as the century‑old system is removed.
  • The broader upgrade under the Emergencia Ferroviaria, executed by Trenes Argentinos Infraestructura, covers about 40 km of track renewal, 47 km of third rail, 24 level crossings, 22 pedestrian crossings, four buffers at Tigre, 23 track appliances and 65 bridges or culverts.
  • Officials cite sleepers and rails over 40 years old and more than 40 slow‑order sectors causing delays, with summer daytime closures chosen due to access constraints and alternative travel options shared with passengers.
