Missing Illinois Man From Great Smoky Mountains Found Safe in North Carolina

Park officials say the rescue ends a multi-day search but the case remains under active investigation with few details released.

  • Searchers located his vehicle in the visitor-center lot and recovered personal items including a wallet, phone, backpack, extra shoes, and cash.
  • The search grew to about 57 park rangers, volunteers and partner rescue teams and included temporarily authorized tools to cover rugged, off-trail terrain.
  • Park officials thanked the public for tips, said the investigation is ongoing, and family members reported no warning signs in their last contact with him.
