Minnesota Overhauls Hockey Leadership as Motzko, Frost Depart

Athletic director Mark Coyle said program reviews showed standards to contend at the top were not being met.

Overview

  • The university announced Wednesday it had mutually parted ways with men's coach Bob Motzko after eight seasons that included five straight NCAA trips, two Frozen Fours, and a 2023 national runner-up finish.
  • Motzko, 64, called the move the right time for new leadership as Minnesota comes off an 11-22-3 season, its first losing campaign under him.
  • Tuesday's decision ended Brad Frost's 19-year run leading the women's program, which won national titles in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016.
  • The women's dismissal followed a home NCAA quarterfinal loss to Northeastern, and Frost had been in the final year of a contract reported at about $300,000 annually.
  • Coyle said the university will conduct nationwide searches for both positions following reviews of performance on and off the ice and reiterated expectations to compete at the sport's highest level.
