Minneapolis Man Pleads Guilty in Syringe Attack on Rep. Ilhan Omar

The agreement envisions an eight to 14 month prison term pending the judge’s decision.

Overview

  • Anthony James Kazmierczak, who pleaded guilty Thursday to assaulting a U.S. officer, faces a prosecutor-supported range of about eight to 14 months as Judge Joan Ericksen sets sentencing.
  • During a January 27 town hall in Minneapolis, he rushed the stage and sprayed apple cider vinegar from a syringe, and Omar was not injured.
  • He told the court he planned the attack and disagreed with Omar’s views, and an affidavit says he earlier told an associate that “somebody should kill” her.
  • He remains in custody as Hennepin County plans to move ahead on separate counts for terroristic threats and fifth-degree assault after the federal case.
  • The case unfolded during protests over a White House immigration crackdown that included two fatal agent shootings in Minneapolis, and it comes as threats against members of Congress have been rising.
