Minneapolis Grocer Charged With $1.14 Million SNAP EBT Fraud

The case grew from a 2021 probe triggered by Walmart loss-prevention alerts.

Overview

  • Prosecutors in Hennepin County charged store owner Abdidwahid Mohamed with felony financial transaction card fraud tied to $1.141 million in SNAP EBT transactions, with a first court appearance set for May 27.
  • Investigators allege he used other people’s EBT cards to buy bulk energy drinks and baby formula at Sam’s Club and Costco between March 8 and Aug. 10, 2021, then resold the goods at his Minnesota Food Grocery store.
  • Walmart’s Global Investigation Team flagged unusual EBT activity in May 2021, which led the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to surveil Mohamed and seek warrants.
  • Charging documents cite surveillance video, GPS data, and cardholder interviews that linked wholesale purchases to his store, and police arrested him on Aug. 10, 2021 at a Bloomington Sam’s Club with another person’s EBT card and a receipt showing the PIN.
  • SNAP pays benefits on EBT cards that work like debit cards, and in this case a conviction could bring up to 20 years in prison or a $100,000 fine.
