  • Researchers at Nanyang Technological University published a Nature Communications paper describing 3D-printed, three-part resin suits that kept Madagascar hissing cockroaches alive and walking underwater for up to three hours in lab trials.
  • The suits contain a miniature oxygen generator that decomposes hydrogen peroxide with manganese dioxide and channels the released oxygen through tiny tubes plugged into the cockroaches’ thoracic spiracles.
  • Engineers validated the design with immersion, bending and drop tests and fixed an early stability problem caused by dorsal mounting that made insects roll over during underwater locomotion.
