- Researchers at Nanyang Technological University published a Nature Communications paper describing 3D-printed, three-part resin suits that kept Madagascar hissing cockroaches alive and walking underwater for up to three hours in lab trials.
- The suits contain a miniature oxygen generator that decomposes hydrogen peroxide with manganese dioxide and channels the released oxygen through tiny tubes plugged into the cockroaches’ thoracic spiracles.
- Engineers validated the design with immersion, bending and drop tests and fixed an early stability problem caused by dorsal mounting that made insects roll over during underwater locomotion.
- The team says the biohybrid approach could let insect platforms carry sensors or electronics into flooded buildings, drains or underwater infrastructure, though the work remains a lab-stage proof of concept with unproven field performance.
