Mini Cooper EV Likely to Shift to Rear-Wheel Drive

Gen6 uses a longitudinal rear-axle motor with an integrated gearbox, which leaves no planned front-drive unit.

  • Multiple outlets report in mid-August 2026 that BMW engineers told Autocar the brand’s Gen6 electric architecture favors a rear-axle, longitudinal motor and that no front-drive Gen6 unit is being developed, making a rear-wheel-drive Mini Cooper EV the most likely outcome.
  • BMW development chief Joachim Post did not deny the rear-drive possibility when asked and Mini design chief Holger Hampf signaled the next Cooper may take styling cues from the R50 generation.
  • The current F66 petrol Cooper will remain front-wheel drive through its mapped lifecycle into the early 2030s and is due mechanical and styling updates before any full-platform replacement.
  • Technically, Gen6 packs an electrically excited synchronous motor mounted longitudinally at the rear axle with an integrated gearbox, a layout that cannot be simply reconfigured into the transverse front-drive packaging that defined historic Minis.
