Minecraft Runs in 3D on Game Boy Color

A hobbyist port compresses a recognisable 3D world into the Game Boy Color’s tiny 8-bit hardware.

Overview

  • YouTuber and modder Game of Tobi demonstrated and published a playable Game Boy Color ROM via Patreon, which he showed on July 9–10, 2026, that reproduces basic Minecraft actions such as walking, looking, placing and breaking blocks.
  • The build is intentionally pared back and missing core systems: there is no health, no inventory, no mobs, textures are off by default for performance, and controls require holding a button to look, making simultaneous movement and sight awkward.
  • Tobi faked a 3D view by using the GBC’s tiny 8x8 sprite hardware to project depth, and the port includes a simple world generator, save/load functionality, and a limited Nether area.
  • The project runs on the original monochrome Game Boy at roughly half speed with reduced visibility because that console has a lower clock speed and no color, showing the work is compatible across both handheld generations.
  • This release follows a pattern of retro engineering that treats modern games as technical puzzles, and the modder says further work is planned with a major update for his earlier GBA build which could push the project toward a more complete experience.
