Overview
- National Weather Service offices and the Weather Prediction Center have issued Heat Advisories and flagged Major to localized Extreme HeatRisk for central states for June 9–12, according to forecasts published Tuesday.
- Forecast heat‑index values are around 104–108°F and air temperatures could reach about 107°F in parts of the Texas Panhandle, increasing the risk of heat‑related illness for older adults, children, outdoor workers and people without reliable cooling.
- The WPC projects the core heat dome will spread eastward later this week, bringing significant heat into the Southeast, Mid‑Atlantic and Northeast with elevated heat risk possibly persisting along parts of the East Coast through about June 15.
- Rising humidity will produce daily scattered showers and an elevated threat of strong to severe thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday, and several local stations have declared Thursday and Friday Impact Days for disruptive heat and storm chances.
- Forecasters expect a cold front late this week to lower temperatures and humidity for many areas, and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center says the same ridge is suppressing near‑term tropical development in the Atlantic.
