Middle School Student Dies After Being Pulled From Andover Pond

School leaders have arranged on-campus grief support as police continue to investigate the May 19 recovery at Field Pond.

Overview

  • An eighth-grade student, identified by the district as Cody Nguyen, went underwater while swimming with friends on May 19 at Field Pond and did not resurface, according to police.
  • First responders located him about 25 feet from shore, found him submerged roughly 10 to 12 feet, and used a paddleboard to bring him to shore where he was unresponsive.
  • He was taken to Lawrence General Hospital and then airlifted to a Boston hospital, where he remained in critical condition for weeks before dying on Friday, the school district said.
  • Andover Public Schools said social workers and guidance counselors will be available Monday and Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Doherty Media Center to support students and staff.
  • Neighbors warned that Field Pond contains underwater weeds, rocks and debris that can trap swimmers, and officials said no further information was immediately available as the investigation continues.
