Overview
- Microsoft began rolling out the changes to Windows Insiders in the Dev and Experimental channels on Friday, citing thousands of user reports about disruption and lack of control.
- Users can now pause updates for up to 35 days using a calendar and reapply that pause with no limit, effectively allowing indefinite delays if they keep extending it.
- Windows will always show plain Restart and Shut down options that do not trigger updates, with separate choices for Update and restart or Update and shut down when users are ready.
- Driver, .NET, and firmware updates will install alongside the monthly quality update to cut the number of reboots most PCs see each month.
- During setup on a new PC, an Update later button lets users skip installing updates to reach the desktop faster, though this option is unavailable on managed business devices that require updates.
