Microsoft Releases Emergency Windows 11 Update to Fix Broken Preview Rollout

The out-of-band patch replaces a March preview that failed to install with error 0x80073712.

Overview

  • Microsoft issued KB5086672 on Tuesday as an out-of-band cumulative update for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 that replaces the faulty KB5079391 and restores normal installation.
  • The pulled March 26 optional preview failed on some PCs with error 0x80073712, a code that signals missing or corrupted update components that block setup.
  • Following widespread install reports, Microsoft paused and limited the preview’s availability on March 28 to curb further impact during its investigation.
  • KB5086672 carries the same features as the preview, including a switch to turn Smart App Control on or off without reinstalling Windows, support for 1000Hz displays, and File Explorer fixes that unblock previews of downloaded files.
  • Devices with “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” turned on may get the patch automatically, others can install it from Settings, and Microsoft reports no new known issues in this release.
