Microsoft Pauses Auto-Install of Microsoft 365 Copilot App on Windows 11

The company offered no reason, saying it will announce if and when automatic installs return.

Overview

  • The pause covers devices that have the Microsoft 365 desktop client, according to a Microsoft 365 Message Center notice.
  • Existing installations remain in place, and administrators can still deploy the app through other methods or opt out via the Apps Admin Center.
  • Microsoft had planned the automatic rollout for late 2025 after initially targeting October, with the app set to appear in the Start menu and be enabled by default.
  • Customers in the European Economic Area were already outside the scope of the automatic deployment, per Microsoft’s update.
  • The step back follows notable customer pushback and a Copilot leadership reorganization that also trimmed some planned Windows integrations.
