Microsoft Offers Free Windows 10 ESU to EEA Consumers Through October 2026

The change follows pressure from European consumer groups over security for devices that cannot move to Windows 11.

Overview

  • Microsoft confirmed that private users in the European Economic Area will receive Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 at no cost through October 13, 2026.
  • Previously proposed enrollment conditions, including collecting Microsoft Rewards points or enabling Windows Backup with a Microsoft account, will not apply in the region.
  • Official Windows 10 support ends on October 14, 2025, leaving users to choose between upgrading to Windows 11, switching platforms, or using the one-year ESU option.
  • Businesses can purchase ESU coverage for up to three additional years beyond the consumer offer.
  • Euroconsumers welcomed the decision after urging Microsoft to ensure ongoing protection for a large installed base that cannot meet Windows 11 hardware requirements.
