Microsoft Lifts Windows' 32GB FAT32 Formatting Cap in Insider Builds

Command-line formatting now supports FAT32 volumes up to 2TB for broader device compatibility.

Overview

  • Microsoft is testing a higher FAT32 volume limit in Windows 11 Insider builds Dev 26300.8170 and Beta 26220.8165, raising the command-line format cap from 32GB to 2TB.
  • The change works only through the "format" command, not the Explorer format dialog.
  • File-size rules do not change, because FAT32 still limits a single file to 4GB.
  • The newer storage and drive info panel loads far faster in these previews, with tests cutting waits from about 15 seconds to nearly zero.
  • FAT32 remains common on firmware update USB sticks, media devices, and some consoles, so the higher cap could spare many users third-party formatters once it reaches stable Windows.
