Microsoft Confirms Recycle Bin Delete Prompt Shows Internal Filenames

Microsoft plans a future update to fix a dialog-only bug that displays internal Recycle Bin names instead of original filenames.

Overview

  • Microsoft confirmed on Friday that the June 2026 cumulative updates cause the Recycle Bin permanent-delete confirmation dialog to show internal names such as "$Rxxxxx.ext" instead of the human-readable filename.
  • The company says the problem affects all supported Windows client and server releases that received the June security updates, listing multiple Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows Server builds.
  • Microsoft and independent testers found the bug only changes what the confirmation box shows and does not alter, corrupt, or prevent restoring the actual files, which still appear with their original names in the Recycle Bin list view.
  • Engineers are developing a permanent fix to be shipped in a future update, and commercial customers can get a temporary workaround by contacting Microsoft Support for Business while consumer devices must wait for the patch.
  • The Recycle Bin glitch is one of several regressions reported after the June updates, including BitLocker recovery prompts, blue-screen crashes, and Office integration failures, which could raise extra work for IT teams responsible for testing and deploying fixes.
