Microsoft Clarifies Windows 11 Printing Policy to Keep Legacy V3/V4 Driver Support

The move reflects a security-focused transition that limits new driver submissions, steering users toward Microsoft's IPP approach.

Overview

  • Microsoft corrected a roadmap entry that had implied removal of legacy printer drivers, confirming existing V3/V4 support continues.
  • Since January 15, 2026, new V3/V4 printer driver submissions to Windows Update are blocked by default and require case-by-case approval for Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025 or later.
  • Existing drivers on Windows Update remain available, installed printers continue to function, and vendors can still ship drivers via their own installers.
  • Beginning July 1, 2026, Windows will prefer Microsoft's built-in IPP driver over third-party legacy options when both are available.
  • Starting July 1, 2027, third-party printer driver updates delivered through Windows Update will be limited to security fixes, with Windows 11’s optional Protected Print Mode offering a hardened, driverless path.
