Microsoft Begins Phased Rollout of Redesigned Windows 11 Start Menu in October Preview Update

Access starts with the KB5067036 preview for PCs enrolled to receive updates early.

Overview

  • KB5067036, an optional October non-security preview, is now available for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 and requires the September KB5043080 update.
  • The new Start menu is being enabled in waves, so many PCs will not see it immediately even after installing the preview; users can check Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog.
  • The redesign merges the All Apps list into the main Start page and offers Category, List, and Grid views with adaptive sizing that can show more pinned apps on larger displays.
  • A new Phone Link panel surfaces recent calls, messages, and notifications from a paired phone, and although some elements can be turned off, the new Start menu cannot be fully reverted.
  • Additional changes in the preview include File Explorer refinements and revamped, color-coded taskbar battery icons; technically savvy users may force-enable features via ViVeTool at their own risk.
