Michoacán Prosecutors Seize Jaguar Cub, Detain Woman in Zitácuaro

The seizures signal a stepped-up enforcement push that could lead to criminal charges or transfer of the animals to specialized care.

Overview

  • Police of the Fiscalía Regional de Zitácuaro acted after a citizen complaint and opened a criminal inquiry for animal cruelty and possible biodiversity crimes.
  • Investigators stopped a gray Volkswagen Tiguan leaving a home on calle Tzintzuntzan in colonia La Mangana and found a jaguar cub inside a transport carrier.
  • The driver, identified as 33-year-old Itzamar V., told agents she had no permits and was detained in flagrancia and presented to the Ministerio Público.
  • The jaguar cub and the vehicle were placed under authority custody for protection and a specialized health and behavior assessment to decide care and legal disposition.
  • The FGE said the action is part of a wider zero-tolerance campaign that included rescuing a Bengal tiger cub in Ecuandureo and could prompt more wildlife prosecutions and transfers to specialist facilities.
