Michoacán Launches Free Statewide Collective Weddings for Feb. 14

State leaders cite last year’s 10,438 divorces in urging an easier route to civil marriage.

Overview

  • Registration is open through Feb. 12 at more than 220 Registro Civil offices across the state.
  • Officials expect about 2,100 couples to participate statewide, with more than 200 unions set for Plaza Morelos in Morelia.
  • The campaign waives fees, saving each couple between 844 and 3,941 pesos in processing costs.
  • Participants must be adults and submit recent birth certificates, official IDs, prenuptial exams or a recent medical certificate, and two witnesses per person; Morelia also requires premarital talks with the state population council.
  • The government says it will send a proposal to the State Congress to drop the apostille requirement in civil registry procedures to reduce bureaucracy.
