Michigan Jury Convicts Jack Robb of Second-Degree Murder in 2024 Drunk-Driving Death

Sentencing on June 25 could bring life in prison.

Overview

  • Jack Robb, now 20, was found guilty of second-degree murder for killing Austin “A. J.” Southwell in a Shelby Township crash and was ordered to jail to await sentencing.
  • The collision happened around 2 a.m. on Jan. 7, 2024 at Hayes and 21 Mile Road, where prosecutors said Robb sped through a red light at nearly 90 mph and struck Southwell’s car.
  • Southwell was pronounced dead at the scene after leaving a family birthday dinner earlier that night, according to authorities.
  • Jurors heard that Robb’s blood-alcohol level measured 0.165 with 5.2 nanograms of THC, and investigators reported finding empty alcohol containers, marijuana paraphernalia, and a fake ID in his pickup.
  • Prosecutors played Snapchat videos recorded about a half hour before the crash, including one that showed Robb chugging a Smirnoff Ice, evidence they said proved the malice required under Michigan’s second-degree murder law and supported rejecting manslaughter.
