Michigan Fires Special Teams Coordinator J.B. Brown

The program cited season-long special teams struggles as the reason for the change.

Overview

  • Michigan announced the move on Dec. 3, days after a 27-9 loss to Ohio State that closed a 9-3 regular season.
  • Special teams ranked 124th in punt returns and 123rd in kickoff returns, and ESPN rated the unit 117th in efficiency.
  • Preseason All-American kicker Dominic Zvada made 15 of 22 field goals (68.2%) this year, though he went 3-for-3 against Ohio State.
  • Punting was inconsistent, including an 11-yard shank vs. Ohio State; returner Semaj Morgan struggled and was replaced late by freshman Andrew Marsh, who logged a 39-yard kickoff return.
  • Brown, 36, had five years on staff and will be paid through Jan. 31 on his $350,000 contract, and Michigan says it will conduct a search for a new special teams coordinator.
